Site map Search Engine Submittal

There is so much written and promised about search engine submissions with 100's of companies offering software packages or guaranteeing to submit your website to 1,000's of search engines, for only a few pounds or dollars.
There has been a lot of search engine takeovers and mergers over the past year or so and the process of submitting your website has changed.
With the amount of spaming from submission companies, it is now more difficult and time consuming to submit your site for free.

An example is that Inktomi which was free to submit to and where most of the main search engines found websites to index, similar to DMOZ, has been taken over by Yahoo and indexing is no longer free, it is now a paid inclusion and ppc program for its owner Yahoo and their Overture partners.

Google gives results to many other search engines such as AOL, Excite / WebCrawler, Netscape and many more. Google also indexes sites listed in DMOZ the Open Directory Project, as dose Yahoo. Yahoo also gives results to Altavista and alltheweb and many more. Yahoo also indexes websites listed in DMOZ, so in affect if you submit to the open directory, Google and Yahoo you will be listed in other main FREE search engines and directories.

Until not long ago it was possible to submit your url automatically to 100's of search engines but with the increase in spaming, most now do not allow for automated inclusion. More and more search engines like google are asking you to put in a random code they give you on the submittal form.

Search engines and directories now ask for far more information than just your url. It is now normal for you to supply an email address for confirmation, that you are the person who submitted the url by replying to their comformation e-mail, again this is to stop automated submissions of websites. You may have to fill in a submission form which has to be filled in manually, you can not copy and paste your website title, description or keywords and some specify a maximum number of characters for each.

The golden rule if you are going to submit your website yourself to the search engines and directories is, first and formost, read each search engines submittal directions, as they are not all the same and if they receive incorrect information details you will NOT be indexed in that search engine or directory.
