| Site map | S E O. Is your
site Spider friendly? or a Spider trap? Making your website Spider Friendly How you build and structure your website has a major impact on how the search engine spiders view, navigate and index your website. So many elements in the makeup of your design can contribute to spider traps and this may lead to the inability of the search engines to index and rank your website at the position your site deserves. First we will look at some of the spider trap pitfalls that can easily be rectified and turned into spider food. Although Java scripts can deliver lovely drop down menus, effects and rollover images, the result is lots of unnecessary java script code in the head tags of your page, that the spiders have to pass through to get to the relevant keyword rich content in HTML. The keyword rich content, we recommend about 150 to 250 words, that you should have on your home page as well as in the lower layer pages. To begin you could put all your java scripts into a folder and create a link to that folder in the head tags. This will speed up the time the spiders have to look at each page, another draw back is if you use java script driven menus the spiders can't read them they also miss the keywords in your menu. This in turn means that the spider robot can't effectually follow the links through your website. The best course of action to speed up and give good directions and "spider food" for the spiders is to have good clean HTML code, plain text "html" navigation, this is a two sided sword, as it will also be full of prime keywords. If you do use a java script menu as we some times do, a good little tip is to place a "Footer" navigation menu in plain text on all your pages and have a text link from your index page to a site map also constructed in plain text this will allow them to roam problem free through your whole website. Always remember to use alt tags on your images, this text should always describe the image and contain a keyword or two if possible. A good descriptive and relevant content, which is keyword rich will help the spiders index your website favorably, as well as giving the viewer interesting and relevant content to read about your product or service. Other spider traps include web pages built in Frames, ASP (active server pages) and Flash. copyright 2004 Aquablue Media | |
